Responding to Welfare Reform Bill

Welfare reform should strengthen the safety net, not pull it away from those who need it most.

We’re relieved that the changes made to the welfare reform bill will protect people who are currently receiving support, and allow time for more consultation and consideration on Personal Independence Payments.

But we remain concerned about what happens with this bill going forward.

Pushing people into poverty

Mental health problems can affect anyone at any time.

Support like PIP payments and universal credit are a lifeline to many people with mental health needs.

Reducing this support would push more people into poverty and reduce their chances of building stable, fulfilling lives.

Investment in the workforce

Most people with mental health needs want to work.

Meaningful employment support is essential, and it must go hand-in-hand with sustained investment in mental health services – and particularly in the workforce that delivers them.

Without growing the workforce and improving working conditions, the system will not be able to meet people’s needs.
